Community Based
Psykiatrin Södra has its units located in the local community. All our units serve the population in a geographically limited area.
In this way it is possible for us to become familiar with the local
circumstances and resources. Where necessary we can easily establish
co-operation with other care providers within, for example, social
services, primary health care and the employment office. Being based in
the local community makes it easier to reach us at all hours of the day
and night. In this way those who seek contact with us also immediately
receive help from persons who know their area.
This community
base makes it possible for the person with the problems, his or her
social network, and the staff from the psychiatric service to develop a
relation over time. In the long-term this means that the consumers and
caregivers can develop a reciprocal knowledge about each other’s
resources and limitations and that the consumers can participate in an
active way in the treatment. In this way it becomes possible to develop
individual interventions based on current needs.
With the emphasis on outpatient services
All
staff within Psykiatrin Södra work with outpatient interventions. This
is a conscious choice. Our starting point is that, in the long run,
inpatient institutions damage those persons who reside within their
walls. People with mental suffering have difficulties in their life and
it is in this life that they must receive help, regardless of whether
the focus of the help is psychological, social or medical.
Our
goal is to offer such help as can be developed in a spirit of
co-operation. In this way the patient’s anxiety over being exposed to
treatments he or she fears is reduced and therewith the periods of
twenty-four hour care often become shorter.
In those cases in
which a person needs to be admitted to inpatient care, efforts are made
to keep an outpatient perspective to the fore.
